About the Organization
The Centre for Health and Mental Health recognizes health as a social, economic and political issue and above all a fundamental human right. It believes that health is integrally related to processes of development and that inequality, poverty; exploitation, violence and injustice are at the root of ill-health and mortality, especially of the poor and marginalized. It believes that if people have to attain the highest standards of health, political and economic priorities need to drastically change. The Centre's work is directed towards creating a society where every person is able to attain the highest possible level of health and well-being regardless of a person's caste, ethnic background, religion, gender, age, abilities, sexual orientation or class and where people are central to the formulation, implementation and evaluation of all health and social policies and programmes.
About the Fellowship
TISS, under the CARET (Consortium for Advancing LGBTQ+ Health Research, Policy Engagement & Training) Project, which is supported by DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance (IA), invites applications for Clinical Research and Training Programme (CRTP) Fellowships focused on LGBTQ+ Health/ Mental Health.

These fellowships are coordinated by Dr. KP/ K Ranade, Assistant Professor, Centre for Health and Mental Health, School of Social Work, TISS Mumbai
Research Focus Areas: Applicants with interest in the following LGBTQ+ health areas are especially encouraged. However, other LGBTQ+ health-related topics will be considered as well:
- LGBTQ+ Ageing and Mental Health
- Lesbian, Bisexual, and Queer Women - (in)visibility and mental health disparities
- LGBTQ+ couples and families - psychosocial issues and interventions
- Gender Affirmative Services - access, quality, experiences of Transgender and Gender Diverse Persons
- Mental Healthcare for LGBTQ+ communities - experiences of LGBTQ+ clients, access, quality
Duration: 3 years
Full-time Fellowship (Individual Support) Amount: ₹70,000 per month
Additional Support: Limited funding for data collection and conference related travel (domestic)
Optional PhD pathway: Selected CRTP Fellows will have an opportunity to do their Ph.D. during the fellowship, although this is not mandatory.
Candidates willing to be admitted to the PhD program need to clear the PhD entrance examination conducted by TISS every year.

MBBS, BDS, MD/MDS and other medical postgraduate degree holders Research focus on LGBTQ+ health/ mental health No concurrent fellowships Willing to accept CRTP terms & conditions Indian citizens.
How to Apply
Call for applications: Twice a year – June & December until the 3 positions are filled.
Application Process:
- Submit a brief bio sketch & research concept note (not exceeding 1000 words) to the email id given below.
- Screening by the CARET committee
- Shortlisted candidates present their proposal in an interview
- Final selection by panel (which may include a representative from DBT/ Wellcome Trust India Alliance)
Fellowship starts: August 2025 or January 2026
Deadline for submission for the August cohort: June 25, 2025
