About the Organization
Migration and Asylum Project (MAP) is a dedicated legal centre for the study of forced displacement and migration issues and works on enhancing access to justice for marginalised communities, with a focus on gender and displacement. Established in 2013, MAP adopts the law as a tool to promote safe migration and recognises it as a powerful instrument for empowerment, analysis, advocacy and policy development. As a result of its efforts, MAP has emerged today as one of the foremost advocates for forced migrants in the region and works to expand the legal protection space for this group. It continues to evolve as an organisation, expanding its activities and constantly innovating to address the growing needs of migrant communities considering the local and international context, through a range of programmes that focus on legal assistance, research, advocacy, empowerment and financial inclusion.
Job Description
The Officer will work with MAP’s Development Coordinator to develop a communication, media, and advocacy strategy, with a focus on digital communication, to showcase its work on forced migration and displacement. The Officer will also work towards creating visibility for MAP’s ongoing programmes. In addition to routinely interacting with the team, its target populations, and other consultants, the candidate will be expected to liaison with international/national networks, external interlocutors and thematic experts across government and civil society in India and the larger region.
The position will be a unique opportunity for a highly motivated candidate to:
- use their creativity and writing skills to raise awareness around issues related to forced migration and displacement,
- gain an in-depth understanding of MAP’s programmes and hone the skills required to sensitively promote our work
- engage with leading domestic and international experts who form a crucial part of MAP’s civil society network
- learn how to develop and manage relations with potential partners and donors who align with MAP’s vision,
- closely interact with migrants and forcibly displaced persons and have a positive impact on the narrative surrounding these communities!
Job Responsibilities
- Design an organisation-wide communications strategy in collaboration with MAP’s Management to bring focus on issues related to migration and forced displacement in India.
- Ensure consistency of MAP’s messaging externally.
- Develop and implement a digital strategy for MAP’s social media platforms with a focus on human stories to increase quality engagement. This will include social media campaigns for key days, themes, and upcoming events.
- Support MAP’s Management in drafting of communications, such as reports, policy briefs, media inquiries, and articles.
- Maintain and make regular updates to the MAP website and work closely with the website developer to ensure proper hosting, accounts, and services.
- Provide guidance and advice on inclusion of communication products in project outreach activities.
- Ensure strategic engagements to promote MAP’s work through media interviews, op-eds, feature articles and other media partnerships.
- Identify and assess potential issues, concerns and risks related to communications and advocacy, and suggest corrective actions to the Management.
- Ensure regular media monitoring and analysis on thematic areas related to MAP’s mandates and programmes.
- Develop a social media guidance note/policy for MAP staff members.
- Design and produce information materials (videos, testimonials, posters, digital stories, policy briefs etc.) to support organisational efforts such as donor reporting, recruitments, fund raising, and external communication.
- Along with MAP’s Management, identify opportunities and execute programmatic events (such as webinars, conferences, dialogues etc.), and cultural exhibitions (refer to the Art section of MAP’s website).
- Coordinate ongoing engagements with MAP’s roster of technical consultants, particularly, illustrators, animators, website designers, and digital storytellers.
Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience
- Open to Indian citizens only.
- Graduate of Mass Communications, Law, International Relations, Journalism, Development Studies, English Literature, or related field.
- At least 3-4 years of dedicated communications, networking and advocacy experience, preferably with development and/or humanitarian organisations.
- Interest in the themes of migration and forced displacement.
- Fluency in English and Hindi.
- Exceptional writing and editorial skills with previous experience in drafting press releases as well as blog and social media posts; good proofreading skills and attention to detail is a must.
- Knowledge of social media best practices with expertise in managing platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn for organisational goals.
- Experience of Graphic designing. Knowledge of software such as Corel draw, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign or Canva, necessary.
- Good design, videography and/or photography skills with demonstrable experience in all of the above.
- High level of proficiency using all Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Event planning and public speaking experience.
- Creative thinker with an eye for design.
Desirable
- A postgraduate degree in the relevant field.
- Demonstrated experience in the field of migration and forced displacement.
- Knowledge of organisations in India engaged in migration related activities and the ability to forge new networks as well as nurture already existing ones.
- Experience of interviewing or interacting with vulnerable groups.
- Work experience in the development sector.
