About the Organization
WASH United, a registered non-profit limited liability company (gGmbH) in Berlin, is an international coalition of national and international civil society organizations, United Nations agencies, governments and leading actors from the world of sport. Together, we harness the positive passion for sport, games and the role model status of stars to promote safe drinking WAter, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for all. Key partners include GIZ, WSSCC, WaterAid, Bayern Munich and BMZ.
The WASH Problem In India
Despite great development over the last few years, India remains at the forefront of the sanitation crisis. In fact, with 638 million Indians living without sanitation, India is the country with most people living without toilets in the world. With more than 1,000 children dying from preventable diarrhea every day, India is the undisputed leader in world diarrhea rankings. The sanitation and hygiene crisis also has a staggering impact on the country’s economy - according to recent World Bank estimates, the consequences of inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene such as increased health costs, productivity losses and reduced tourism cost India approximately USD 53.8 billion - 6.4 % of GDP every year. To tackle this problem, WASH United has tied up with Quicksand and is in the process of implementing its flagship property, the “Great WASH Yatra”.
The Great WASH Yatra
The Great WASH Yatra (Yatra) is a multi-channel, awareness generation mega-campaign by WASH United and Quicksand that seeks to positively influence the perception of sanitation and hygiene among key target audiences in India. The Yatra will distinguish itself from other behavior change programs by harnessing the positive power of the things Indians love most - Bollywood, dance, song, but above all cricket - to achieve its goals.
Planned around the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup in 2012, the “Great WASH Yatra” will combine the enormous passion for cricket leading up to the World Cup, the massive role model status of cricket superstars in the country, exciting game-based WASH education, and highly innovative edutainment to create a veritable spectacle around sanitation and hygiene issues. People will engage with the issues of sanitation and hygiene in a playful and positive carnival-style atmosphere, instead of the normal queues of shame. An entirely new set of exciting interactive educational games, communication material, and WASH events will be developed.
