Background
The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote regional cooperation for inclusive economic and social development in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership, through its analytical, normative and technical cooperation, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.
The Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology (APCTT) is a regional institute under the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. The objectives of the Centre are to assist the members and associate members of ESCAP through strengthening their capabilities to develop and manage national innovation systems; develop, transfer, adapt and apply technology; improve the terms of transfer of technology; and identify and promote the development and transfer of technologies relevant to the region.
This position is located in the Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology (APCTT), New Delhi, India. The post reports directly to the Head of APCTT
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Head of APCTT and in close consultation with the designated staff responsible for the implementation of work programme related to food security and sustainable agricultural technologies, the incumbent is required to perform the following functions:
1. Researches, extracts and compiles basic information and technical data related to sustainable agriculture, food security, technology transfer and related topics.
2. Identifies the organizational requirements for capacity building trainings, conferences and meetings and also assists in the logistical aspects of organizing these programmes in various countries in the region.
3. Establishes and maintains contacts with a wide range of stakeholders including project partners, donors, governmental and non-governmental organizations, other departments in the Secretariat, as well as with other UN agencies and programmes and co-ordinates the input of other departments for the successful and timely implementation of assigned tasks.
4. Prepares a variety of reports and documents as per the reporting requirements of the projects and prepare presentations, tables, lists, charts, data sets, and/or diagrams for information in order to facilitate the in-depth analysis of the retrieved information by the supervisor and other users.
5. Prepares, maintains and updates files (electronic and paper).
6. Sorts, consolidates extracts and processes data and enter into relevant database.
7. Assists in monitoring developments/issues on subjects or areas assigned by collecting, selecting, analysing and compiling materials from multiple sources, e.g., relevant databases, the library and the Internet.
8. Assists in the evaluation and examination of data sets for accuracy, clarity and validity and also in the maintenance of relevant computerized databases.
9. Prepares abstracts/bibliographic descriptions for inclusion in documents, articles, books and publications.
10. Performs other related work as assigned by the Head of APCTT and other designated staff
Qualification/Experience
High school diploma or equivalent. University degree and a post-graduate qualification in agriculture, food processing, agricultural economics, social science, or related area are desirable. Must have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away.
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in scientific research support in the area of agriculture, food security or related area is required. Experience within the United Nations Common System or other international organization is desirable. Familiarity with statistical programs such as SPSS or STATA is required. Relevant IT skills, including familiarity, with Microsoft Office and web-based applications are required.
