Background
Habitat for Humanity International is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. The purpose and goal of Habitat for Humanity International is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses in partnership with families in need. Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is looking for a motivated and experienced individual to fill the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO), for a start-up Housing Finance Company (HFC) called MicroBuild India. This key individual will provide visionary leadership, management, and strategic oversight in setting up & managing the apex MicroBuild India aimed at impacting poverty housing in India. Initially, the HFC will focus its operations in Southern India, before expanding to other areas. The CEO will report directly to the Board of Directors.
As part of its strategy to expand housing solutions in India, HFHI is establishing MicroBuild India in order to provide loans to Micro finance Institutions (MFIs) wanting to venture into housing micro finance. The HFC will be a social enterprise, regulated by the National Housing Bank and its mandate is to promote innovation in the field of housing micro finance. Financing from the HFC will be accompanied by technical assistance in construction technology, delivered by Habitat for Humanity India. The corporate office will be located at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and Southern India with the position being placed in one of these locations.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
Collaborate with the Board of Directors (BOD) to define and articulate the organization’s strategy for achieving its vision and mission
Create annual operating/business plans that support the strategic direction approved by the BOD and correlate with annual operating budgets
Hire staff and set up office
Oversee strategy to meet or exceed financial and social targets for growth & institutional sustainability
Oversee the operations of the organization and manage its compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
Serve as the primary spokesperson and representative for the organization and actively advocate for the organization, such that its mission, programs, and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders
Collaborate with Habitat India in defining scope & delivery of services by the Technical Assistance Center
Work with local & foreign investors to promote the HFC
Secure debt financing based on the business plan targets
Build relationship with Housing and Micro finance networks/ donors/ stakeholders / regulators/ wholesale lenders/ social enterprises to promote the HFC and the housing finance sector in India
Facilitate functioning of various board committees
Qualification/Experience
Master’s degree in business, finance, development, or related area
Minimum 15 years work experience at a senior level including 5 years managing wholesale lending operation and 5 years in housing or housing finance
Successful record of leadership, preferably in a social enterprise environment
Proven ability to work successfully with both commercial and non-profit entities
Fluent in English (Verbal and writing skills)
Working knowledge of predominant language spoken in South India (e.g. Tamil, Kannada), highly desirable
