About us:

Ayang Trust is a social purpose organization working towards building the ecosystem for sustainable self empowered communities in Northeast India through interventions in quality education and livelihoods. At the heart of the organization is The Hummingbird School started in January 2017 to provide a contextual and holistic education to the children of Majuli, set up completely in partnership with the local community. Ayang grew out of the various and urgent needs of the people of Majuli and was registered in November 2017 and has since expanded its work into a diverse range of development programs.Ayang Trust is guided by the values of integrity, equity, excellence, love, and collaboration. We envision a world where everyone has a choice to live a life of love, dignity, and purpose irrespective of conditions at birth.

The opportunity:

The Hummingbird School is looking for a female candidate for the position of Student Mentor to guide and support our students who are pursuing their higher secondary education at Poorna Learning Center, Bangalore. The ideal candidate will motivate and mentor students, fostering their academic progress and personal development. 

Key Responsibilities: 

● Support students in setting and achieving their learning goals. 

● Facilitate discussions that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills. ● Act as a bridge between students and their learning journey, offering guidance on their progress. 

● Offer personalized mentorship to address individual student challenges and aspirations. 

● Encourage students to explore their interests, build confidence, and take initiative in their learning. ● Maintain regular communication with the Poorna Learning Center team regarding student progress and challenges. ● Whenever the students are traveling home, you must accompany and guide them. ● Create and maintain a safe and positive learning environment. ● Monitor student progress and provide regular feedback to help them achieve their goals. ● Encourage a growth mindset and foster resilience in students. 

Key Role Requirements: ● Highly adaptable to urban living and proficient in navigating the city with ease. ● Highly reflective practitioner, open and responsive to feedback. ● Strong interpersonal and communication skills to connect with adolescents. ● Patience, empathy, and a deep understanding of student needs. ● Ability to handle difficult conversations and provide constructive feedback. ● Passionate about equity and justice while being rooted in love. ● Comfortable coaching adolescents, including setting expectations, ensuring accountability, motivating them to work hard, handling difficult conversations, and resolving conflicts. ● Strong organizational and time-management skills.● Ability to build meaningful relationships with students, colleagues, and the wider community. ● Familiarity with alternative and experiential learning methodologies is an advantage. 

Qualifications: ● Relevant work experience in mentoring or guiding students is highly desirable. ● Any undergraduate/postgraduate degree. ● Proficiency in oral and written English is preferred. ● Knowledge of the Mishing language will be considered an added advantage.

An internship opportunity can be arranged at the Poorna Learning Center, Bangalore, subject to availability and alignment with their learning objectives. ● Flexibility to pursue one’s own study: The candidate will have time during the day, when the students go to school, to prepare for any examination or course of their choice from home or via online classes.
