About Margins to Access Project
Margins to Access Project (MAP), formerly known as the Migration and Asylum Project, is a legal aid centre committed to facilitating access to justice through systemic and sustainable change. Working at the intersection of migration, gender, and justice, we operate from the grassroots to the highest institutions to decentralise and democratise the justice system. We recognise that overlapping forms of marginalisation demand more than a one-size-fits-all approach to justice, and are deeply committed to addressing the devastating impact of poverty, migration and displacement on communities, particularly women and girls.
The Position
The Project Coordinator – Law and Gender will play a key role in leading and supporting MAP's legal and gender justice programming under the Displacement, Movement and Inclusion (DMI) Department. The position will provide legal and technical leadership for programme implementation, capacity building, legal research, strategic interventions, partnerships, advocacy, monitoring, evaluation, learning, and documentation. The Project Coordinator will work closely with communities, grassroots justice actors, lawyers, legal service institutions, government stakeholders, civil society organizations, and other actors within the justice ecosystem. The role requires a strong understanding of gender justice, women's rights, access to justice, and relevant legal and policy frameworks. The Project Coordinator will also contribute to strengthening community-rooted and gender-responsive approaches to legal empowerment and institutional accountability.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Provide legal and technical oversight legal expertise, analytical guidance and thought leadership for the implementation of project activities, ensuring that interventions are grounded in relevant national and international legal and policy frameworks and aligned with project objectives.
- Conduct legal capacity-building and training for grassroots justice actors, including paralegal volunteers, lawyers, litigators, community-based justice actors and other relevant stakeholders across the States in which the organisation operates, with a focus on women’s rights, access to justice and available legal remedies.
- Design and conduct legal workshops, trainings and awareness sessions for relevant stakeholders and communities, translating complex legal and policy frameworks into accessible and practical guidance.
- Undertake programme-based legal research and analysis, including research on laws, policies, judicial decisions and institutional practices affecting women’s rights and access to justice, and contribute to policy and advocacy strategies based on this research.
- Support and/or undertake strategic legal interventions, including legal analysis, case documentation, litigation support, preparation of legal submissions and engagement with appropriate judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative mechanisms.
- Engage with accountability and redress mechanisms, including relevant UN mechanisms and domestic judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative bodies, and support the preparation of complaints, petitions, submissions, reports and other legal or advocacy interventions.
- Oversee community and stakeholder outreach and engagement, ensuring that legal needs, barriers to justice and community experiences are appropriately documented and incorporated into programme design, implementation and advocacy.
- Contribute to monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) by developing and tracking relevant legal and programme indicators, documenting outputs and outcomes, analysing emerging trends and lessons, and using evidence and learning to strengthen project implementation and strategy.
- Maintain high-quality documentation and reporting systems, including timely preparation of narrative and technical reports, case studies, outcome documentation and other project deliverables, in accordance with donor and organisational requirements.
- Contribute to project review and learning processes, including assessing the effectiveness of legal interventions, identifying challenges and adaptations, and documenting promising practices and models that can inform future programming and advocacy.
- Develop and maintain networks and partnerships with relevant government departments and officials, legal professionals, justice-sector actors, civil society organisations, community-based organisations and other stakeholders to strengthen access to justice and implementation of project activities.
- Build effective collaboration with institutional and justice-sector actors relevant to the project, including legal services providers, lawyers, courts and tribunals, statutory bodies and other accountability institutions, as appropriate.
- Represent the organisation at relevant meetings, consultations, conferences and other forums, including making presentations and contributing legal and policy expertise.
- Travel as required for official purposes in accordance with project and organisational needs.
- Undertake other duties and responsibilities as reasonably assigned in furtherance of the organisation’s objectives and its work with the communities it serves.
