About the Organization
Founded by Harvard & National University of Singapore Alumni, Slam Out Loud (SOL) is a not-for-profit organization that uses the transformative power of the arts to build Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills in children from disadvantaged communities. Through our program, The Art for All Fellowship, we bring artists into classrooms to create safe spaces where children can express themselves freely and confidently.
Since 2017, SOL has impacted 3,00,000 children in person and reached ~10.5 million digitally. Our work has been recognized by the OECD, World Bank, The LEGO Foundation, and UNESCO, and our partners include UNICEF, Girl Rising, HP, and Rainmatter Foundation
Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and community-rooted Educator to join our team in Nabha, Patiala, Punjab, to join immediately (preferably in the first week of August).
The ideal candidate will demonstrate fluency in Punjabi, reside within the community, and possess a strong passion for utilizing art and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) to empower children and engage caregivers and teachers.
The schools are located in a low-income, rural area of Nabha, Patiala. The community primarily consists of migrants from socio-economically underserved backgrounds. Most residents are marginalized and employed as unskilled laborers.
Job Responsibilities
In the Classroom
- Design and facilitate arts-based SEL sessions (including introduction, baseline, and endline sessions) in two elementary schools in Nabha, Punjab.
- Conduct sessions weekly (60–90 minutes per class), adapting to each school’s timetable.
- Create lesson plans using visual and performance art to promote SEL and students' voices.
- Conduct beginning and end-of-year assessments to track student learning and inform planning.
- Observe other classroom teachers and document reflections to improve facilitation.
In the Community
- Conduct weekly home visits to understand children’s contexts and build caregiver relationships.
- Plan and facilitate parent circles, teacher well-being circles, and regular stakeholder check-ins.
- Leverage these insights to design and implement a contextual Community Art Project (CAP) that fosters collective expression and community belonging.
Planning, Documentation, and Coordination
- Attend and actively engage in all pieces of training, learning circles, and weekly check-ins with your Manager.
- Document all sessions, home visits, reflections, and student progress regularly.
- Collaborate with school leaders and staff to create a cohesive experience for students.
Showcase and Events
- Organize and execute a mid-year and final Showcase of Learning (e.g., open mic, nukkad natak, mural painting, art exhibition).
- Represent SOL and your students’ work at community or school events when needed.
Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience
Fluency in Punjabi (spoken and written).
- Willingness to reside full-time within the local community in Patiala and travel locally for home visits and events.
- Strong skills in planning, organizing, and facilitating creative, inclusive sessions.
- Demonstrated experience in either visual or performing arts.
- Graduate in any stream (final-year students eligible if coursework will be completed by July 2025).
