Job Description

The incumbent will work primarily for the project “Identification and Conservation of Important Wetlands along the Central Asian Flyway” and related initiatives of Wetlands International South Asia, with a primary focus on hydrology and water resources. Responsibilities include hydrological and catchment-scale assessments, analysis and modelling of wetland–catchment interactions, and evaluation of climate and land-use impacts on wetland dynamics. The role involves integrating hydrological insights into site prioritisation and management planning, engaging with stakeholders, delivering capacity-building programmes, and contributing to technical reports, knowledge products, and project concepts in wetland management.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design and implement hydrological and water quality monitoring programmes at demonstration sites, including in-situ measurements, sampling, laboratory analysis, and interpretation of physico-chemical and biological parameters to evaluate wetland condition and management effectiveness
  • Lead the development, validation, and application of hydrological and water quality assessment tools, modelling frameworks, and decision-support systems for wetland management
  • Formulate and review concept notes and project proposals addressing wetlands hydrology, hydro-ecological processes, and integrated water resources management
  • Strengthen the technical capacity of wetland managers and stakeholders in hydrological and water quality assessment methodologies, and in integrating wetlands into basin-scale water resources planning and policy
  • Coordinate the preparation, execution, and monitoring of operational plans in collaboration with partner institutions, ensuring technical rigour and alignment with project objectives
  • Provide scientific inputs to policy and advocacy initiatives related to wetlands hydrology, water quality, and climate change adaptation
  • Develop and implement targeted communication and outreach strategies to disseminate scientific findings on wetland–hydrology–climate linkages
  • Prepare peer-reviewed scientific papers, technical reports, and data-driven recommendations for wetland conservation and management.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Master’s degree in Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Aquatic Ecology, or a closely related discipline with a strong hydrological component
  • Proficiency in hydrological and hydro-ecological assessments, including wetland-catchment water balance, flow modelling, and hydrodynamic analysis
  • Demonstrated skills in water quality monitoring, including sampling design, analysis of physico-chemical and biological parameters, and interpretation of results
  • Competence in GIS and remote sensing applications for hydrology and wetland assessment.
  • Familiarity with hydrological modelling software (e.g., SWAT, MIKE SHE, HEC-HMS, WEAP) and statistical analysis tools (e.g., R, Python, or similar)
  • Strong technical writing and scientific reporting skills
  • Minimum of 6 months of relevant professional experience in hydrology, water quality monitoring, or wetland/aquatic ecosystem management
  • Proven track record in designing and implementing field monitoring programmes for hydrology and water quality
  • Experience in integrating field data with modelling outputs to support management planning and decision-making
  • Engagement with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders, including government agencies, research institutions, and local communities
  • Experience in policy and advocacy on wetlands, water management, or climate change will be an advantage.

Desirable qualifications

  • Knowledge of wetland biodiversity and migratory waterbirds
  • Familiarity with Ramsar Convention, CMS, and related national wetland policies
  • Experience linking hydrology with ecosystem service assessments and management planning
  • Skills in advanced spatial analysis, hydrological–hydrodynamic modelling, and climate scenario integration
  • Proven ability to design and deliver technical capacity-building programmes
  • Track record of translating scientific outputs into policy-relevant recommendations
  • Publications in hydrology, wetland science, or aquatic ecosystem management
  • Experience in multi-site or transboundary wetland conservation projects.
