Purpose of the Role

The Android Mobile Developer will be responsible for designing, developing, testing and maintaining Android-based mobile applications that support organizational and project requirements.

The role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable, secure and user-friendly mobile solutions, ensuring seamless integration with backend systems and optimal application performance.

External: Public Health Officials and other stakeholders
Internal: Health Tech Team, BIDA, QA and Operations

Essential Qualifications

BE/BTech/MS in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related discipline.

Essential Experience

• 2–4 years of experience in mobile development across Android and iOS.
• At least 4 applications deployed in production and live on the Google Play Store.
• Understanding of Google’s Android design principles, Material UI and interface guidelines.
• Prior experience developing highly customized and inventive user interfaces for iOS and Android.
• Proficient understanding of code versioning tools such as Git.
• Solid understanding of the complete mobile development lifecycle.
• Experience working with third-party Android libraries and APIs.
• Experience with local databases and offline data storage.
• Strong knowledge of applications requiring intensive server communication using RESTful APIs, GraphQL, etc.
• Experience integrating external devices such as Bluetooth and IoT devices is an advantage but not mandatory.

Essential Skills

• Ability to understand user needs and business requirements and develop mobile applications that meet customer expectations and add value to end users.
• Experience conducting code reviews of team members’ commits and maintaining high-quality code for long-term maintainability.
• In-depth knowledge of at least one programming language such as Swift, Java or Kotlin.
• Commitment to writing clean, maintainable code and adhering to coding standards and best practices.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve complex technical issues.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
• Ability to guide and manage junior developers.
• Strong interest in tackling difficult and innovative bespoke development projects while adhering to engineering best practices.

Good to Have

• Experience with Kotlin and Java for Android application development.
• Knowledge of MVVM, Clean Architecture and Android Jetpack components.
• Experience with REST APIs, JSON parsing and third-party SDK integrations.
• Familiarity with Firebase including Push Notifications, Analytics and Crashlytics.
• Knowledge of SQLite, Room Database and offline data synchronization.
• Experience with Google Maps, GPS and location-based services.
• Understanding of mobile application security and data-protection best practices.
• Familiarity with Git, version control and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience publishing and maintaining applications on the Google Play Store.
• Exposure to AWS, cloud-based services and backend integrations.
• Experience with QR code scanning, camera integration and Bluetooth connectivity.
• Knowledge of Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
• Experience working on healthcare, public health or government-sector applications.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and debugging skills.
• Good communication and stakeholder coordination abilities.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Mobile Application Development

• Support the entire application lifecycle, including concept, design, testing, release and support.
• Design and develop applications for the Android ecosystem.
• Create tests for code to ensure robustness and performance.
• Fix known bugs in existing Android applications and add new features.
• Ensure cross-device capability.
• Ensure both new and legacy applications meet quality standards.

Technical Design & Integration

• Define the technical design for the mobile application ecosystem, including enterprise integration using REST services, vendor mobile APIs and push notifications.
• Integrate available plugins to use native phone APIs for push notifications, geolocation and other functionality.
• Develop custom plugins at the native layer when the required functionality is not supported by the chosen framework.
• Work with vendor software libraries and APIs.
• Work with CI/CD pipelines, Git and version control systems.
• Work with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
• Support Bluetooth, QR code scanning, camera integration and device peripherals.

User Experience & Stakeholder Coordination

• Interact with field teams and end users to understand requirements.
• Design user interfaces that provide an excellent user experience.
• Debug crash and bug reports with different stakeholders.
• Research and recommend new mobile products, applications and protocols.
• Stay updated with emerging technology trends.
