Job Description
The Nutritionist/Public health consultant with experience in community engagement and child creches will be preferred. The consultant will play a critical role in supporting SEWA Bharat’s nutrition initiatives in Bihar. Their primary focus will be providing technical expertise and supporting the team on improving the nutritional status of children, particularly those suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM), Severe Underweight (SUW), Moderate Underweight (MUW), and other forms of malnutrition.
In addition, the consultant will work in close coordination with SEWA Bharat’s project team, community mobilizers and Grassroot community leaders called Aagewans for building their capacity to identify early signs of malnutrition and take timely corrective actions. Consultant will design and customize culturally relevant nutrition education materials, ensuring accessibility and practical applicability for rural households. The consultant will also support the development of monitoring and evaluation frameworks to track creche children’s and Women of Reproductive Age’s (WRA) growth and health outcomes, offering evidence-based recommendations to strengthen SEWA Bharat’s child health interventions.
Job Responsibilities
The expected role of the Nutritionist/Public health consultant is summarized below:
- Provide expert guidance on developing different individualized menu(s) for children affected by SAM/SUW, MAM and MUW categories aligning with locally available foods.
- Ensure that menu planning adheres with the nutritional standards while aligning with local dietary practices and seasonal available foods.
- Monitor the nutritional adequacy of meals being provided to the children in differentiated categories.
- Work with crèche and field teams to monitor and analyze the nutritional status of children by tracking growth/ anthropometric indicators and identifying early signs of malnutrition.
- Identify children at risk in categories of SAM/ SUW and MAM/ MUW, and other undernutrition conditions and recommend timely interventions such as dietary modifications, supplementation, or hospital referrals as and when required.
- Develop age-appropriate, culturally relevant, and cost-effective menus for children, ensuring dietary diversity and balance, with a focus on locally available and affordable nutrient-rich foods.
- Provide practical guidance and recipe demonstrations to align crèche meals with nutritional needs, while training local women to prepare nutritious meals using familiar ingredients.
- Identify training needs through assessments and identify strategies to address them.
- Develop and implement training programs and capacity-building of community workers, caregivers, and crèche staff through training sessions on child nutrition, growth monitoring, safe feeding practices, dietary diversity, and hygiene.
- Support community mobilization and awareness on maternal and child nutrition, preventive health, breastfeeding, hygiene, and early detection of malnutrition, engaging mothers, caregivers, and local leaders.
- Serve as the technical person for nutrition within the project. Train and guide grassroots leaders (aagewans, karyakartas, and crèche workers) in identifying health issues, promoting preventive practices, and spreading awareness on nutrition, hygiene, and reproductive health.
- Analyze creche data to identify trends, gaps and areas of improvement to provide actionableinsights to the project team.
- Act as a bridge between SEWA members, local health systems, and government schemes by leading health awareness campaigns and camps, ensuring timely referrals, follow-ups, and connecting women with essential maternal and child health services and entitlements.
- Conduct assessments to identify nutrition related information needs, provide training to the project team.
- Prepare regular progress reports on nutrition related activities and achievements.
- Use the monitoring and evaluation framework to track progress towards project goals and objectives
- Document case studies, good practices and success stories from the field to inform programmatic decision-making and knowledge sharing among stakeholders.
Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience
- Education: Master’s degree in Public Health, Nutrition, or Dietetics or a person having experience in community health and working for children in creches/ day care/ early child care centres.
- Experience:Minimum 3–5 years of work experience in child nutrition/ public health programs. Prior work with malnutrition will be an asset.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of child nutrition, creches and public health guidelines.
- Familiarity with community based approaches, participatory planning and nutrition indicators.
- Experience in menu planning using local resources.
- Training and capacity-building skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate data into actionable insights.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to work with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to synthesize field data, prepare reports and develop presentations.
- Competency in using MS office and SPSS software.
- Languages: Fluency in verbal and written communication in English and Hindi
- Willingness to travel to the field frequently
