Position: Sr. Programme Associate
Number of vacancies: One
Duration: Long-term position (6 months probationary period)
Location: ANET campus, Wandoor, Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Position details: The position involves working with different teams within Dakshin as well as other stakeholders in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands for improving the solid waste management system in the islands. The Senior Programme Associate will be responsible for implementing interventions on waste management in Andaman islands and mentoring community catalysts (Youth Ambassadors) to lead change on ground.
The primary responsibilities of this position include:
- Working with the internal team to design and implement interventions on improving different aspects of the solid waste management system in the islands.
- Liaising with stakeholders (including youth, women, community leaders, local organisations, government officials) and building partnerships as required for the interventions on solid waste management.
- Overseeing the Youth Ambassador programme, including coordinating, monitoring and reviewing the work of the Youth Ambassadors and providing regular mentoring, capacity building and troubleshooting support.
- Maintaining and analysing data, report writing and fulfilling other reporting requirements
Candidates must possess the following qualifications and skills:
- Master’s degree in natural resource management, rural/community development/ sustainability studies/development studies/environmental studies.
- Four to eight years of relevant experience and expertise working on solid waste management issues and systems.
- Fluency in English (spoken and written) and Hindi (spoken).
- Demonstrable ability to independently organise meetings and undertake coordination of field logistics.
- Proven ability to work in collaboration with diverse stakeholders and teams.
- Proven ability to stay in a rural field site for an extended duration. Please note that this position requires candidates to be based in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for at least 10 months of the year.
Preferential Requirements:
- Experience in working with rural communities and youth on development and environmental issues will be an added advantage.
- Preference will be given to women and candidates from the Andaman and Nicobar islands considering the nature and themes of work involved in the YA programme.
- Knowledge of Bengali/Telugu/Karen will be an advantage.
- Candidates with two-wheeler driving experience and holding a valid driver's license will be preferred.
Remuneration: Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and work, in line with our internal policy. Candidates shortlisted for the interview will be given further details on the salary ranges to review.

About the Youth Ambassador programme
Dakshin launched the Youth Ambassador programme in April 2024 to empower young women to lead change within their communities, focusing on solid waste management and sustainable menstruation. Following intensive training and skill development, the Youth Ambassadors have been actively driving grassroots engagement and mobilising efforts to improve waste management practices in their areas. They have also been promoting sustainable menstruation and supporting women in transitioning from sanitary pads to eco-friendly alternatives. Dakshin continues to strengthen their leadership, communication, and facilitation skills, enabling them to participate more effectively in local governance across a range of community issues.
