Applications Invited for Global Reporting Grants

Organization: Pulitzer Center
Apply By: 10 Jun 2025
Grant Amount: 10000 USD
About the Organization
The Pulitzer Center has a bold vision: to be the venue for the world’s most innovative and consequential reporting, with journalism as the key element for mobilizing society through audience engagement strategies.
Founded in 2006 by Jon Sawyer, the Center is an essential source of support for enterprise reporting in the United States and across the globe. The thousands of journalists and educators who are part of our networks span more than 80 countries. Our work reaches tens of millions of people each year through our news-media partners and an audience-centered strategy of global and regional engagement.
We believe that people and communities who actively engage with systemic challenges will find solutions together. By supporting journalists as they conduct in-depth investigations, produce compelling stories, and engage diverse audiences, we create a ripple effect of world-changing impact. The result? Policy reforms, public awareness, and community empowerment.
About the Grant
The Pulitzer Center’s global reporting grants support in-depth, high-impact reporting on critical issues that are often overlooked in the media. This is our "catch-all" grant, so there are no restrictions on topic or reporting location. Staff and freelance journalists are eligible worldwide.
Awards cover reporting costs and are based on reasonable, detailed budgets. Most awards for international travel are between $5,000 and $10,000, but may be more or less depending on circumstances. We expect news organizations to pay journalists for their work, though in exceptional cases, we may consider stipends to cover a reporter's time. If you are applying on behalf of a newsroom, university, or similar, please note that we do not allow overhead or indirect expenses in our budgets.
We support projects across all media platforms and encourage ambitious proposals that combine print, photography, audio, and/or video for one or more news outlets. The most successful projects are those in which news outlets match our commitment by adding interactive, data, or multimedia elements to enhance and showcase their original reporting.
Grants are open to reporters, photographers, radio/audio journalists, television/video journalists, and documentary filmmakers. We are committed to supporting journalists from diverse backgrounds and of all nationalities.
Eligibility
Grants are open to all journalists: writers, photographers, radio producers, and filmmakers; staff journalists as well as freelancers. We support veteran reporters who have been widely published, but also back younger applicants who are looking for help to jumpstart their careers. A diversity of voices— gender, ethnicities, backgrounds and nationalities—is important to us. Some applicants get a grant on their first try; others have to work harder at it. One applicant who was twice rejected kept coming back and eventually went on to do a dozen different projects with Pulitzer Center support.
How to Apply
To apply, you will be asked to provide the following:
- A description of the proposed project in no more than 250 words.
- A thorough publication plan. Letters of interest or commitment from editors and news outlets should be included.
- A preliminary budget estimate, including a basic breakdown of costs. Travel grants cover hard costs associated with the reporting; please do not include stipends for the applicants. Local reporting partner/translator/driver fees are acceptable.
- Three samples of published work, either print or broadcast.
- Three professional references. These can be either contact information or letters of recommendation. The latter is encouraged when letters from interested producers or editors are available.
- A copy of your curriculum vitae.
Applications may also include a more detailed description of project but this will be considered as optional supplement only. The most important part of the submission is the 250-word summary. Applications must be written in English.
