Job Description
As a part-time sustainability specialist (consultant role) for the Sustainability Initiative, your role will be matrixed. Your solid-line, anchor manager will remain the same if you are staff, if you are new to WRI, your solid-line, anchor manager must be someone within your local office(s). Your dotted-line, outcomes manager, will be the Global Sustainability Initiatives Lead, based in the US office. You will be part of the Global Sustainability Core Team, which meets weekly to coordinate sustainability across WRI’s network and tracks progress towards institutional sustainability goals.
Overall the part-time role focuses on local engagement and communications with a strong alignment to global strategy and data, research activities. You will collect local data, such as energy bills, vendor information, staff survey data and collaborate with the Sustainability Analyst to analyze and calculate GHG emissions following WRI’s Greenhouse Gas Protocol methods and following the boundaries and methodologies established for the entire network. The majority of the role utilizes this data to prioritize, strategize, and lead engagement activities for country offices. This may include, but is not limited to, waste audits, swap events, bike and walk events, and local vendor engagement on sustainability. The role will also promote global engagement activities, such as the Carbon Price Fund, business travel campaigns, and sustainable procurement efforts. Finally, the role may choose to, depending on size and engagement levels, organize and lead a local Sustainability Champions working group. The group will include local staff and members will automatically be added to the global Champions list for network-wide meetings.
Job Responsibilities:
Project Management (25%)
- Manage sustainability strategy adoption and implementation in country office(s)
- Develop action plans for each office to align projects, metrics, and engagement to global WRI sustainability strategy
- Evaluate project performance, including data collection and analysis of GHG emissions and cost savings estimates, and staff surveys
- Manage budget, timeline, and payments for projects
- Engagement, Collaboration, External Networking Tasks (15%)
- Lead staff engagement activities and events to shift behaviors on sustainability within each country office (e.g. bike campaigns, zero waste audits, and swap events)
- Collaborate with global operations to integrate sustainability into existing or new policy and procedures
- Support engagement and knowledge-sharing with peer organizations, partners, vendors, and funders
Communications, Reporting Tasks (10%)
- Lead reporting of WRI’s GHG inventory and other metrics, including collecting data from vendors and local financial systems to report to global sustainability team at monthly, quarterly, and annual frequencies
- Communicate global and local data and action progress to local staff and across global network
Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree with preference for degrees in business, public policy, economics, political science, environmental studies, mathematics, accounting and finance, sustainability management, or related operations or non-profit fields
- Familiarity in GHG emissions inventory accounting concepts, additional training to WRI’s methods and standards will be provided by the Sustainability Core Team.
- Attention to detail and high-level competence with data, especially using Excel.
- Ability to communicate ideas to large and diverse teams of stakeholders, primarily in written English but speaking and graphic skills are encouraged.
