Job Description
WWF-India, one of the leading conservation organizations, engaged in wildlife and nature conservation in the country, is looking for a dynamic and motivated individual to be a part of its Rivers & Wetlands team as a Hydrologist.
This position will be a part of a highly experienced team undertaking pioneering and exciting work and offering unique learning opportunities. You will be part of a team working towards protecting and conserving iconic and charismatic species that live in our rivers—the Ganga river dolphins, gharials, otters, turtles—to name a few. Together with various State Governments, local stakeholders, businesses and technical institutions, the Rivers & Wetlands team of WWF India is engaged in rejuvenation of over 700 kilometers of rivers and thousands of hectares of wetlands (small and big) across the country. This include include– rivers like the Ganga, Ramganga, Yamuna, Chambal, Beas, Brahmaputra, Noyyal, Bhavani, Arkavathy and wetlands of national and international importance (Keoladeo National Park, Harike, Upper Ganga). You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of ecologists, water resources and river basin specialists, aquatic biodiversity experts, social scientists and governance experts. This team works across multiple levels, from grass-root to district-level, state-level and central level; and from on-ground implementation to policy engagement.
Job Responsibilities
- Conduct hydrological and hydraulic modelling for rivers and wetlands using tools such as SWAT, MIKE, HEC-HMS, MOD FLOW etc.Provide hydrology and hydraulics related inputs to programmatic initiatives like environmental Flows (E-Flows) assessments, ecosystem services valuation, basin management scenario development, trade-off analyses, integrated management plans for river basins and wetlands.
- Undertake field visits for primary data collection, thematic field surveys (topography surveys, hydraulic surveys, river and wetland profiling etc.) and validation of hydrological assessments.
- Build hydrological and ecological knowledge base on priority river basins by compiling and analyzing hydrological, climatic, geospatial and remote sensing data; generate thematic and customized maps using GIS platforms (ArcGIS, QGIS).
- Lead designing, implementing and maintaining hydrological monitoring systems and decision support tools to inform action on various river basins and wetlands.Support research design, data interpretation, and preparation of standard operating protocols, knowledge products, scientific documentation, prepare technical reports, concept notes, and presentations.
- Coordinate with knowledge partners, technical institutions, communities, and cross-cutting teams within WWF-India for implementation of various tasks
- Support the team in organizing technical workshops, consultations, and training programs and represent WWF-India in various fora.
Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience
- Postgraduate degree (M.E./M.Tech.) in Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related fields from a reputed institution.
- 5-7 years of experience in water resources modelling, hydrological assessment, or water resources planning
- Proven experience with modelling software (SWAT, MIKE series, HEC-HMS), GIS tools (ArcGIS/QGIS), and understanding of hydrogeological concepts.
- Proven experience in handling sophisticated technical survey equipmenT.
- Familiarity with riverine ecosystems, basin planning, wetlands and groundwater and prior experience on working on hydrology-ecology interface will be desirable
- Exposure to field settings and open to travel in project areas located in different river basins in IndiA.
- Ability to translate technical work into actionable policy and conservation interventions.
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams.
- Strong communication skills, including ability to present work to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Self-motivated, organized, and able to work under tight timelines.
- Willingness to travel extensively, especially to remote project sites.
